Republicans Push for Oversight Hearings on DHS
Republican lawmakers are reviving their request for oversight hearings concerning the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following the tragic death of a federal officer in Minneapolis. Representative Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), who leads the House Homeland Security Committee, announced on Saturday that he is aiming to gather testimony from high-ranking officials at DHS in light of the incident involving 37-year-old Alex Preti.
Garbarino’s request builds on an invitation that commission staff sent out on January 15, which he is now formally pursuing. The officials he has identified for testimony include Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Commissioner Todd Lyons, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Rodney Scott, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Commissioner Joseph Edlow.
“As Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, my main goals are to keep Americans safe and ensure that DHS fulfills its core mission,” Garbarino mentioned. He also emphasized the congressional responsibility to look after the safety of law enforcement agencies and those they protect. He expressed commitment to ensuring that ICE, CBP, and USCIS effectively use historical data to improve public safety and is eager to have these agencies testify.
The tragedy of Preti’s death has heightened tensions in Minnesota and stirred significant political discussion in Washington, reflecting criticism of federal immigration enforcement practices. Protests have erupted, reflecting a divided sentiment among voters regarding the federal response.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has urged the Trump administration to discontinue ICE operations in the state, highlighting that these actions seem to reduce, rather than enhance, safety in the city amidst another recent fatal shooting involving a U.S. citizen.
Frey commented that those in charge of such operations ought to reevaluate their objectives, questioning whether they are genuinely achieving peace and security or contrarily exacerbating the situation.
In contrast, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pushed back against Frey’s statements during a press conference, accusing him and Governor Tim Walz of stoking tensions and resisting federal law enforcement, which complicates immigration operations. She stressed the need to scrutinize the rhetoric and actions that may encourage violence toward both the public and law enforcement officials.
