Oklahoma Governor Criticizes Trump Administration’s Immigration Policies
Oklahoma’s Republican Governor Kevin Stitt expressed his disagreement with various aspects of the Trump administration’s immigration strategy, emphasizing that Americans do not support the idea of deporting “all non-Americans.”
In a recent discussion with CNN anchor Dana Bash, Stitt referred to the recent shooting death of Alex Preti, a 37-year-old man, by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis as a “true tragedy.” He noted the importance of further immigration reform under President Donald Trump to tackle ongoing security issues in Minnesota.
Concerns Over Protests Amidst Rising Tensions
Stitt remarked, “President Trump promised to close our borders and eliminate violent criminals. I think most people can agree with that. But now, many are left wondering what the ultimate goal is. Is it just about kicking everyone out? That doesn’t seem to be what most Americans want. We really need practical immigration solutions.”
Bash inquired whether Stitt believed President Trump should withdraw ICE agents from Minnesota following the shooting incidents. Stitt responded, “That’s a question only the president can address. He’s known for making deals and, honestly, I think he’s receiving some misguided advice at the moment. He owes it to the people to clarify the plan forward.”
Encouraging Employment for Americans
The governor continued, “We must enforce the laws, but it’s important to understand the end goal. I doubt it’s about deporting every non-citizen out there.” Stitt further suggested that the administration might focus on incentivizing private companies to hire American workers rather than penalizing those who employ non-Americans. He stated, “We shouldn’t just offer citizenship to everyone. If there’s to be a working relationship in this country, we really should aim to fix it rather than turn it into a political issue. The anger out there? It’s just wild—and we really need to bring that down.”
White House Responses to Immigration Criticism
In a response, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson reinforced President Trump’s commitment to his deportation promises, citing operations aimed at removing illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes, despite facing harsh backlash. She added context about violent incidents involving agents, describing a recent altercation.
Stitt, who had previously collaborated with ICE on a deportation initiative called Operation Guardian, which resulted in the apprehension of 120 illegal immigrants, pointed out the importance of finding a better way to manage immigration issues. He stressed the need for dialogue and practical solutions rather than exacerbating tensions.
Preti’s death occurred less than a month after another incident where ICE agents shot and killed Renee Good, marking a troubling trend in immigration-related confrontations.
