Sean McDermott expected to take a year off after surprising Bills dismissal

Sean McDermott, recently let go by the Buffalo Bills, seems to be considering his options for a head coaching role next season. However, according to NFL Network, he might actually sit out for the year.

Ian Rapoport mentioned on Sunday that McDermott hasn’t engaged with any teams searching for a new head coach since the Bills parted ways with him following a tough overtime loss to the Broncos last weekend in the divisional round.

At 51, McDermott would be a strong candidate for nearly any head coaching position if he chose to pursue one, though it’s been noted that he hasn’t shown interest in any current opportunities. There’s still some uncertainty about what he plans to do next.

If he does decide to take a break, McDermott might be waiting for another opportunity next year, similar to what Mike Tomlin seems to be contemplating after resigning from his position with the Steelers earlier this offseason.

The Bills are actively looking for McDermott’s successor and are interviewing several candidates, including former quarterback Philip Rivers and former Giants head coach Brian Daboll. Surprisingly, Bill Belichick, despite his six Super Bowl victories, isn’t viewed as a contender for the role.

During his nine years with Buffalo, McDermott had an impressive record of 98-50 and secured five AFC East championships. Yet, he was ultimately unable to lead the Bills and quarterback Josh Allen past the AFC Championship game and into the Super Bowl.

Of the ten head coaching vacancies this offseason, only four are still available, including Buffalo. The other teams still searching are Cleveland, Las Vegas, and Arizona, while more appealing positions like the Giants, Baltimore, Atlanta, and the Steelers have already been filled.
