Nassau Executive Blakeman criticizes Gov Hochul for turning down federal assistance

Blakeman Criticizes Hochul’s Rejection of Federal Aid Amid Severe Winter Storm

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has expressed his disappointment with New York Governor Kathy Hochul for turning down federal assistance this weekend. He argued that “useless” political decisions are compromising public safety while the state faces severe snow and ice.

“In a major emergency like this, it’s crucial to have federal support,” Blakeman stated on Sunday, referencing the winter storm that began to impact New York. He added, “I think it’s pretty unwise of Governor Hochul.”

Hochul had been approached earlier by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who had recommended that the fastest way to assist New York during this crisis would be by withdrawing immigration enforcement agents to ensure safe access to warming centers, shelters, and hospitals. Blakeman quickly labeled Hochul’s decision as “irresponsible,” urging the government to prioritize public safety over political disagreements.

Governor Hochul’s office has yet to provide a response to requests for comment. Currently, New York City is investigating seven deaths that may be weather-related.

Blakeman appeared on “The Big Weekend Show,” detailing how snowfall, subzero temperatures, and freezing rain have created hazardous conditions. “It’s quite problematic,” he noted, warning of frigid temperatures next week, alongside forecasted accumulations of 10 to 14 inches of snow, compounded by a layer of ice from freezing rains. This combination makes it exceedingly challenging to clear roads for safe travel.

He mentioned that while pavement usually dries within a day, these conditions might extend that process significantly, further endangering both pedestrians and drivers on the road.
