David Wright encourages Mets fans to have faith in ‘proven winner’ David Stearns

David Wright Reflects on Mets’ Offseason Changes

David Wright seems to be taking the recent departures of key Mets players quite personally. Edwin Diaz has joined the Dodgers and Pete Alonso is now with the Orioles, while his former teammates Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil have been traded to the Rangers and Athletics, respectively.

Wright, a former captain and Hall of Famer for the Mets, called these changes “tough.” Still, he encouraged fans to have faith in the team’s management during this offseason of transitions.

“I love both Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo; I built a bond with them,” Wright shared in a recent interview with SNY. He acknowledged Alonso’s contributions but said, “I don’t know him very well personally. It’s hard for me to see them go.”

“However,” he continued, “if you look at the big picture, David Stearns is a proven winner. Let’s give him a chance to execute this plan.”

Stearns joined the Mets as the director of baseball operations after a successful tenure as the Brewers’ general manager. His time in Milwaukee saw the team reach the playoffs in five out of six seasons from 2018 to 2023, even operating under financial constraints.

After the Mets fell short of the postseason in 2025, Stearns indicated that things needed to change. Recently, the team signed superstar infielder Bo Bichette, and they bolstered their rotation with ace Freddy Peralta, along with center fielder and former All-Star Luis Robert Jr.

Additionally, New York brought in swingman Tobias Myers as part of the Peralta deal and added veteran depth with players like Craig Kimbrel, Luis Garcia, and Vidal Burjan. These additions somewhat alter earlier plans that included signing former Yankees closers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, as well as acquiring first baseman Jorge Polanco and second baseman Marcus Semien.

Stearns expressed optimism about the new roster, saying, “We have confidence in this group. I think this group will gel well.”

Wright, who dedicated his entire 14-year career to the Mets, understands the deep connection fans have with homegrown talent. At 43 years old, he encouraged supporters to think long-term as the organization looks ahead to 2026.

“It’s natural for Mets fans to feel bonded to their players,” he remarked. “That said, let’s give the front office under David Stearns a fair chance to implement their vision this offseason.”

“It’s easy to rush to judgments,” he cautioned. “Before casting stones, let’s allow a plan to unfold.”
