Senate Republicans Demand Immigration Department Testimony

Republican senators are insisting that leaders from several immigration agencies within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) testify publicly. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has specifically called for the heads of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to present before his Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee next month.

In a trio of letters addressed to Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, CBP Director Rodney Scott, and USCIS Director Joseph Edlow, Paul pointed out that DHS has received significant funding aimed at enhancing border security and enforcing immigration laws. It’s a lot of money, and, well, he wants to ensure it’s being used appropriately.

“Congress has a duty to oversee these tax dollars and ensure that the funds are used to accomplish the mission, provide adequate support to law enforcement, and most importantly, protect the American people,” Paul stated. He emphasized the need for public hearings before February 12, 2026, and requested contact by January 28 to finalize the appearance.

It’s worth noting that, recently, Senate Democrats have threatened to block funding for DHS in the wake of a shooting in Minnesota involving a Border Patrol agent, which has added to the tension surrounding the department.

Paul’s request follows a troubling incident where Border Patrol agents were involved in the tragic deaths of two individuals, Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Goode. This has stoked controversy, with backlash coming from both Senate Democrats and some within the Republican party regarding the actions taken in Minnesota.

Nonetheless, Paul’s primary focus seems to be the financial aspect. With Senate Democrats bracing to block the upcoming DHS funding bill, he’s keen to understand how the already allocated $1 billion is being utilized, especially since it was tied to President Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

Additionally, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is expected to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee in early March. This follows her previous lack of response to inquiries from Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).
