Trump’s Positive Call with Minneapolis Mayor Amid Protests
On Monday, President Trump described his phone conversation with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as “very good.” Frey is set to meet the president, along with the “border czar,” on Tuesday after the state has seen violent protests and tragic shootings involving federal agents.
“I had a really nice conversation on the phone with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey,” Trump stated on Truth Social, adding, “We are seeing a lot of progress!”
According to Trump, Tom Homan will meet with Frey the following day to continue their discussions.
Mayor Frey, a Democrat, expressed his appreciation for the dialogue with Trump. He mentioned, “I shared how much Minneapolis benefits from our immigrant community and made it clear that my main demand is that Operation Metro Surge must end,” as he posted on X.
Frey told reporters, “The president has agreed that the current situation cannot continue.” He stated that starting tomorrow, federal personnel would begin to withdraw from the area, and he would continue to press for the remaining personnel involved in this operation to leave as well.
Officials informed the Post that U.S. Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino and several agents have been instructed to exit Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of a second American by federal officers. It’s worth noting that this directive doesn’t apply to all Border Patrol agents or ICE personnel.
Additionally, Homan has been assigned to oversee Minnesota’s immigration operations, succeeding Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Tragically, 37-year-old Lenny Good, an anti-ICE protester, was shot by an ICE officer on January 7 after allegedly driving an SUV aggressively towards the officer. Similarly, ICU nurse Alex Preti, also 37, was killed during an altercation with Border Patrol agents while reportedly armed with a pistol and subsequently disarmed.
