Islanders Bounce Back with Dominant Win Over Flyers
The Islanders stepped into Philadelphia on Monday night struggling, having lost their last two games by a hefty margin—9-1 combined.
For a team that hadn’t faced three straight regulation losses since their first three games of the season, a defeat here would’ve knocked them below the playoff line. They really needed this win.
Even without Simon Holmstrom, Cal Ritchie, and Ryan Pulock due to various illnesses and injuries, the Islanders persevered, shutting out the Flyers 4-0 at Wells Fargo Center.
This performance was a stark contrast to their recent outings.
They excelled on special teams, maintained puck control in the offensive zone, and effectively minimized dangerous chances for Ilya Sorokin near the goal.
If they’re looking to secure a playoff spot and make an impact in the tournament, they’ll need to replicate this kind of effort consistently.
Coach Patrick Roy has been exploring different line combinations and seems to have stumbled upon some that work well. The trio of Jonathan Drouin, Matt Barzal, and Anthony Duclair dominated the ice. Barzal netted a goal by converting a shot from Isaiah George just 5:41 into the second half, making it 2-0.
This goal was flanked by two special teams scores, including a shorthanded one from Jean-Gabriel Pageau at 14:29. Pageau capitalized after a clever spin feed from Cizikas bounced off the wall and into the net.
Barzal contributed again on a power play, assisting Tony DeAngelo, increasing the lead to 3-0 at 12:50. It was notable, too, as it marked DeAngelo’s first power play goal as an Islander.
The Flyers didn’t seem equipped for a comeback, and Pageau added another goal at 13:38 in the third, making it 4-0. It was a nice setup off the wall from Max Tsyplakov, marking Pageau’s second goal and first assist of the year.
The revamped fourth line of Mark Gatcom, Casey Cizikas, and Kyle McClain performed well, while Emil Heineman and Bo Horvat also showed promise on the second line. Max Shabanov found his footing as the game progressed, and Tsyplakov continued to build chemistry with Pageau and Anders Lee. The Islanders will be counting on Tsyplakov, who stepped in for Holmstrom after an illness, to regain his confidence and contribute more.
Sorokin, for his part, faced minimal pressure, achieving his sixth shutout of the year with just 21 saves and not much to worry about.
With injuries piling up, the Islanders are reportedly looking to add Carson Soucy to their roster. A deal appears to be nearing completion between the Rangers and Islanders, with a third-round pick in 2026 potentially on the line.
However, if Pulock’s upper-body injury keeps him out for an extended period, Soucy alone might not suffice. Ritchie, who had been called up recently due to a lower-body injury, is also becoming a concern.
In the grand scheme, losing on Monday could have felt like a significant crisis point in the season.
Instead, the Islanders’ overall performance and commanding victory over a rival below them in the standings offered some much-needed relief.
