Chiefs’ Travis Kelce Contemplates Future
The Kansas City Chiefs are keeping the door open for Travis Kelce as he considers whether to return for his 14th NFL season. Team owner Clark Hunt has expressed confidence that the 36-year-old tight end still has much to contribute but also wants to allow Kelce the space to think about his next steps.
Hunt remarked, “He had another great year this year, maybe not quite what he had four or five years ago, but he still recorded over 800 yards and was a key player on our offense. I have no doubt that he can still play, so we’re going to be respectful and give him the time he needs to make a decision.” These comments were made during an appearance on “Good Morning Football” and highlighted on Pro Football Talk.
Kelce is currently busy with his engagement and upcoming marriage plans, and Hunt emphasized the importance of respecting that time frame. “We certainly want him back,” he added.
In the recent season, Kelce managed to dash for 851 yards and five touchdowns, an improvement from his 2024 stats of 823 yards and three touchdowns, even amid a decline in the team’s overall performance.
The Chiefs, usually a competitive force in the AFC, finished the season with a disappointing 6 wins and 11 losses, marking the first time they missed the playoffs since 2014. The challenges included the injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a torn ACL in December but hopes to be back by Week 1 of the 2026 season.
As the offseason unfolds, the Chiefs are making notable changes. Matt Nagy is no longer with the team, and former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is returning to his previous role.
Kelce recently celebrated his transition to New Heights, and his comments hinted at his playing future. “I can’t wait to have him back in the building,” he said about Bieniemy. “He’s one of my all-time favorite coaches and people. I’ve experienced significant growth both as a player and a person under his guidance. It will be great to see him back with the Chiefs.”
Bieniemy previously served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, most recently working as the Bears’ running backs coach.
