Sundance Film Festival Spark Debate on Immigration Policies
Being a Hollywood star has its challenges, and now, more than ever, those challenges are intertwined with the political landscape. Recent discussions have emerged around the harsh actions of law enforcement towards individuals entering the country without permission.
This year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, provided a backdrop for some pointed reflections.
“Illegal military forces are being used against American citizens.”
A Weighty Question
Take actor Ed Norton, for instance. During what was supposed to be a light discussion about his new film, *The Invite*, alongside co-stars Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde, the conversation took a somber turn as they addressed President Trump’s immigration policies. Norton remarked, “These days it’s like, ‘What if the masked Gestapo shoots an American citizen?’”
Seth Rogen, trying to lighten the mood, asked, “Did you find the answer?”
Norton, however, maintained his serious stance: “We’re sitting here talking about a movie while an illegal military is being forced against the American people.”
Wilde nodded in agreement.
Wilde’s Statement
The heavier discussion subsided after a brief moment, returning to lighter interactions about their work. Yet, Wilde’s choice of “ICE OUT” lapel buttons—worn with a casual outfit featuring a striped shirt, jeans, and a denim jacket—served as a constant reminder of the ongoing issues.
The day prior, she had made a similar statement with a striking black dress. It featured sheer lace, enhancing the visibility of the buttons.
Expressing Fear
In a longer dress the following day, Wilde elaborated further: “I’m horrified by this series of murders that we’re justifying and normalizing. I think it’s insane and scary.”
She continued, “It’s really hard to be here celebrating something beautiful when you know what’s happening outside.” She expressed solidarity with Americans protesting for justice, declaring, “We stand with them. And if we can use our platform, we will demand that ICE be withdrawn.”
Portman Joins the Conversation
At the same festival, Natalie Portman drew attention not just for her fashion choice but also for expressing her dissent regarding the administration’s policies. Her “ICE OUT” button made it clear where she stood.
Portman candidly criticized the Trump administration, calling its approach “the worst of humanity.” She added, “We have the best of humanity in that people do things for each other.”
