Fidelity’s Danoff to Retire After 35 Years
Will Danoff, a leading figure in stock picking and manager of the Fidelity Contrafund for over three decades, is set to retire at the end of this year. His leadership has been marked by impressive returns, making him one of the most noted investors globally.
In a statement, Danoff, 65, expressed his gratitude: “Managing Contrafund for 35 years has been a privilege, helping millions of Fidelity customers invest wisely and retire comfortably.” He plans to stay on with Fidelity Investments as an advisor.
The management of Contrafund will transition to Jason Weiner and Asher Anolik, both seasoned Fidelity professionals who were appointed as co-portfolio managers last year.
Danoff spoke positively about his successors: “We have collaborated and learned together over decades. They’ve fully embraced Contrafund’s investment strategy, backed by Fidelity’s extensive research team.”
This announcement signifies a significant change for Fidelity, which has long been speculating about Danoff’s potential departure. Joining Fidelity in 1986 under the mentorship of renowned investor Peter Lynch, Danoff became the sole manager of Contrafund in 1990.
Throughout his tenure, the fund has yielded approximately 10,500 percent in returns—more than double that of the S&P 500. As of the end of 2025, Contrafund had about $176 billion in assets, as reported by Bloomberg.
Until recently, Danoff was effectively overseeing more than $300 billion across various strategies. Over the years, he built relationships of trust with both clients and executives in his portfolio, which includes tech giants like Amazon, Nvidia, and Meta, even playing occasional tennis with Mark Zuckerberg.
In an interesting ad released by Fidelity in 2016, a man is seen writing to Danoff, sharing a photo of his son, noting he had invested in Contrafund for his child’s education. This was inspired by a letter Danoff actually received.
Nidhi Gupta and Matt Drucker, who currently manage smaller funds under Danoff’s oversight, will take on new responsibilities following his departure.
Bart Grenier, head of wealth management at Fidelity, commended Danoff for navigating through challenging market conditions over the years. He noted, “Will’s influence on countless shareholders and customers is truly inspiring.”
