California Teen Becomes Honorary NYPD Officer

Miller-Greenfield, a 17-year-old from California, recently took an exciting step toward his goal of serving the community by being sworn in as an honorary police officer in New York City. This special moment unfolded on Tuesday at 1 Police Plaza, where NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch administered the oath, bringing smiles all around.

Living in Sacramento, Miller is facing a rare neurodegenerative illness. Despite this, he radiated joy during the heartfelt ceremony. “I can definitely protect New York and keep our communities safe,” he confidently expressed.

This day wasn’t Miller’s first encounter with law enforcement; he’s been connected to the police department since 2019. After undergoing brain surgery, he got involved through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, as shared by his father, Johnny Greenfield.

Johnny mentioned Miller’s aspiration to meet the chief of the Sacramento Police Department and one day don the badge himself. “Since then, he has grown close to the local police, achieving ranks of sergeant and lieutenant. He’s frequently at the station,” his father explained.

Miller’s ongoing engagement with law enforcement serves as a testament to his resilience in battling health challenges. “Every day he surprises us,” his father noted, stating the young man was wheelchair-bound just a few years ago. “We hardly use it anymore. He gets tired, for sure, but this experience will definitely recharge him.”

The day was packed with activities organized by Tisch and NYPD officials. It kicked off with a press conference from the chief, rolled into a tour of the department’s emergency services unit, and included visits from the Mounted Unit horses and a K9 officer.

He was also set to visit the NYPD’s Joint Operations Center, a facility equipped with numerous screens monitoring police activity across the city. Miller was already amazed by the technology on display outside Tisch’s office. “There’s definitely more tech in that room than in all of Sacramento PD,” he remarked.

The NYPD experience solidified Miller’s ambition of becoming a full-time officer. “I’ve always thought about it, but now I think it’s for sure,” he admitted.

In a chance to share his thoughts, Miller left a note in Tisch’s journal praising the NYPD. “NYPD is better than SacPD,” he wrote, which certainly pleased the officers nearby.

Johnny was even more expressive in his note: “Lieutenant Miller is my hero.”
