Snow Removal Controversy in Jersey City

Jersey City’s new mayor is facing backlash over a significant snow removal issue that led to school closures this week. Mayor James Solomon is pointing fingers at his predecessor, Stephen Fulop, for the debacle.

Solomon created a stir with a post he shared after Winter Storm Fern, stating that hosting a parade in Jersey City is easier than managing skyscraper construction. He asked rhetorically which task was simpler—building a skyscraper or plowing the streets.

One frustrated resident commented on social media about the lack of efforts to clear snow from sidewalks and roads. They expressed exasperation, suggesting that the community seems to have forgotten how to cope in winter conditions.

Another user voiced their anger, calling for action from the city due to individuals neglecting their properties. They claimed the city should be sending workers to address the situation, which has become quite dangerous.

Several residents chimed in, sharing images of hazardous conditions as the ice began to settle. Responses varied, with some agreeing on the severity of the issue, but also lamenting that it had become too late to effectively manage the icy situation.

In contrast, other cities have fared better. For instance, New York City’s Mayor was able to organize cleanup effectively after a similar storm, ensuring schools could reopen promptly. In Jersey City, however, in-person classes are expected to resume only on Wednesday.

On social media, Solomon addressed the public, noting that people should report snow removal needs through designated city channels. He promised a detailed review of the snow response process to improve future efforts.

The mayor’s spokesperson remarked that the previous administration lacked a proper snow-planning strategy, as it became evident when preparing for the storm. There was clear dissatisfaction with the outdated approaches from the previous leadership.

As part of his commitment, Solomon revealed that the city plans to modernize snow management, including potential updates to their tracking systems for snowplows.

Yet, some remain skeptical, with a Reddit user pointing out Solomon’s own experience on the city council. They questioned whether he has recognized the recurring nature of these issues.
