NFL community stunned by Bill Belichick not being inducted into the Hall of Fame

It’s somewhat startling that Bill Belichick isn’t considered a “first-ballot Hall of Famer.” If you’re surprised, well, you’re definitely not alone.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the NFL community. On Tuesday night, ESPN shared that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach did not make the cut for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on his first attempt.

Belichick actually missed gaining the necessary support—40 out of 50 votes from the selection committee, which includes a media representative from each team and other public members.

Interestingly, ESPN noted that Belichick’s involvement in two major scandals—Spygate in 2007 and Deflategate in 2015—came up during discussions. According to reports, Bill Polian, a former Colts GM and member of the voting committee, suggested some voters hold off on supporting Belichick for a year. However, Polian has denied any claims he voted against him.

Whatever the underlying reasons, Belichick—who clinched two Super Bowls as the defensive coordinator for the Giants—will not be recognized in 2026, which definitely has left many in disbelief.

Moreover, Hall of Fame coach Jimmie Johnson expressed his frustration, questioning the identities of those who didn’t support Belichick, calling them “cowardly.” Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, shared his shock as well, remarking, “This is insane…I don’t even understand how this is possible.”

Others like JJ Watt voiced their discontent, stating he couldn’t fathom how Belichick wasn’t a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Even Cam Jordan offered his confusion, commenting on the puzzling admission process for the Hall of Fame candidates.

An NFL executive messaged ESPN, stating those who didn’t support Belichick should be “exposed,” expressing disbelief at the situation. Ryan Clark, an ESPN analyst and Super Bowl winner, went so far as to say that if Belichick couldn’t make it in, then no coach should expect to be inducted on the first ballot. He emphasized that Belichick is, without a doubt, one of the most successful coaches in NFL history.

Belichick, who has been named Coach of the Year three times, wrapped up his career with a record of 302 wins to 165 losses in the regular season, along with 31 playoff victories.
