Mike Posner Reflects on His Journey Since ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’
Mike Posner, known for his 2015 hit “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” has shared that a lot has shifted for him since he penned the song 13 years ago. He noted that he has rewritten the lyrics to more accurately represent his current experiences, incorporating themes like faith and love.
In an Instagram post, Posner explained, “You might recognize me from that song. I wrote it while I was in Los Angeles, struggling to find myself and often searching for love in all the wrong places.” He accompanied the caption with a nostalgic photo of a merry-go-round.
Continuing his thoughts, he remarked, “It’s been 13 years since that song came out. During that time, I’ve really discovered who I am. I found my faith and the love of my life. We’ve even moved to Austin to begin a new chapter.” He also mentioned that the lyrics of “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” have been completely revamped.
Posner shared that he recently performed these new lyrics live for the first time, much to the delight of the audience. A brief video of this performance showed the crowd responding enthusiastically to the updated version.
In the rewritten song, he sings, “I returned to Ibiza and booked a hotel by the coast. But now I’m twelve years older, ten years sober, and Avicii isn’t here anymore.” This marks a significant shift from the original lyrics where he reflected on his past mistakes and a longing to impress Avicii.
The previous lyrics describe a lifestyle of excess: “I took drugs in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool. When I sobered up, I felt a decade older, but back then, that was what everyone did.” In contrast, the new lyrics emphasize personal growth and a desire to build a family: “I’m moving from L.A. and aiming to start a little family because every choice I made led me to grief.”
Posner expresses a newfound desire to embrace life, stating that he wants to share his gifts with the world and live with purpose. “I only get one life, so I’m giving my life to God, who will guide me back to the stage,” he sings in the chorus.
While the old chorus spoke to feelings of isolation, the new version shifts the narrative from sadness to love, changing the line, “All I know are sad songs,” to “All I know are love songs.”
As he revealed last year in a series of posts, Posner has mentioned that his connection with his previous hits has changed dramatically, highlighting that his relationship with God has deepened. “Looking at the lyrics now, I can proudly say that none of them represent who I am anymore. I’ve become a new person—and I’m proud of that,” he expressed.
