Sam Darnold’s Journey to Super Bowl LX
Last year’s Super Bowl drew an impressive average of 127.7 million viewers on FOX, consisting of everyone from die-hard NFL fans to those simply enjoying the occasion. As excitement builds for the upcoming game, “NFL Red Zone” host Scott Hanson has identified a compelling narrative surrounding the matchup between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
“Sam Darnold is the story,” Hanson shared about the Seahawks’ starting quarterback.
The human aspect of sports goes beyond just stats and game plans. For Darnold, his journey to this moment has been filled with ups and downs. Hanson believes that even those without a vested interest in the game should find a reason to cheer for him. “I think every NFL player has felt sidelined or overlooked at some point,” he said. “We’ve all heard those disheartening words: ‘You’re not good enough. We tried and it didn’t work. Goodbye.’ It’s a universal feeling.” He emphasized that Darnold has managed to push through that negativity and perform when it counts.
Darnold’s Rocky Path
When he entered the NFL Draft in 2018, many expected Darnold to be the top pick, especially by the Cleveland Browns. However, he ended up being selected third overall by the New York Jets, who had opted for Baker Mayfield instead. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned in New York, where the Jets haven’t made the playoffs in almost ten years. Darnold’s tenure there lasted just three seasons, ending with his release to the Carolina Panthers, marking what seemed like a downturn in his career.
Yet, as Hanson points out, Darnold has shown resilience. After a couple of seasons with the Panthers, where he started 17 games, his contract wasn’t renewed. But instead of giving up, he found a chance with the San Francisco 49ers, where he secured a backup role behind Brock Purdy, even overcoming competition from Trey Lance. It’s a fascinating ascent that also highlights how a player can defy expectations.
In his time with the Vikings last season, Darnold won 14 consecutive games and reached Super Bowl LX, marking a first for any USC quarterback. “Think about the legacy of the Trojans – no USC quarterback has ever started a Super Bowl,” Hanson remarked.
Joining the Seahawks seemed like a perfect fit for Darnold, largely due to his rapport with offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak from their previous collaboration in San Francisco. It feels almost poetic that they’ll be returning to Santa Clara for such a significant game.
Ultimately, Darnold’s story is about perseverance, self-belief, and making the most of every situation he’s faced. “Even Jets fans might say, ‘Sam, we picked you to beat the Patriots and win a championship. If you make it to the Super Bowl, we’re rooting for you,’” Hanson reflected. For those not tied to either team, it’s an appealing narrative to support.
Preparing for the Big Game
As Super Bowl LX approaches, there’s also a fun side to the excitement. Lowe’s is launching an innovative “Earn Your Sunday Bucket Belt,” designed to enhance the game day experience. The belt wraps around a Lowe’s 5-gallon bucket, perfect for holding snacks, drinks, and grilling tools for the ultimate game day setup.
Hanson promotes the idea that everyone should be prepared with their game day essentials. “It’s all about snacks and drinks on Super Bowl Sunday. You can even use the bucket to keep your beverages cold,” he shared. The Bucket Belt is available now exclusively to specific Lowe’s reward members.
