Apple TV’s Hijack Returns with Surprising Twists

The highly anticipated second season of Apple TV’s high-octane thriller Hijack has been delivering jaw-dropping moments each week.

In the shocking premiere of Season 2, viewers discover that the hijacker this time is Sam Nelson (Idris Elba). Episode 2 reveals that John Bailey-Brown (Ian Barfield), the mastermind behind the Season 1 hijacking of Kingdom Air, is influencing Sam’s uncharacteristic actions. By the third episode, titled “Baggage,” the connections between Sam’s fixation on hijacking trains and his need to confront Bailey-Brown finally come to light.

**Spoiler alert: Major plot details from Season 2, Episode 3 below.**

During Episode 2, Sam makes a desperate call to the authorities, warning them that if they don’t locate Bailey-Brown in Germany, 200 passengers’ lives will be at stake. The plot thickens when Episode 3 confirms fans’ worst fears: Sam’s son, Kai (Jude Cudjoe), is dead. To complicate matters, Sam’s ex-wife, Marcia (Kristin Adams), is also in jeopardy. This “baggage” serves as the driving force behind Sam’s extreme actions.

So, what really happened? Why did Hijack kill Kai? And what led to Jude Cudjoe’s departure from the show? We explored the answers in Episode 3 and gathered insights from interviews with co-producer Jim Field Smith.

Unraveling the Mystery: Why Did Hijack Kill Kai?

In Episode 3, Olivia (Claire-Hope Ashiti), who was set to meet Sam to discuss Bailey-Brown, makes an important connection. She realizes the significance of Kai’s death, occurring exactly one year ago on the same date as Sam’s hijacking. “It’s today!” she exclaims after reading Sam’s file. “Nelson’s son died in a car accident, and he believes it was no accident—he thinks Bailey-Brown is to blame.”

While many may think Sam is purely seeking revenge, the storyline is far more intricate. We also learn that Sam’s mother, Marcia, is isolated in a cabin, marking a dark anniversary, adding to the concern for her safety.

In a heart-wrenching moment early in Episode 3, Marcia reflects on her loss, going through keepsakes from Kai’s infancy. Just when it seems Sam is making progress—after receiving a photo of Bailey-Brown—an ominous anonymous email threatens Marcia’s safety.

Sam isn’t just hijacking in pursuit of revenge; he is being manipulated, with Marcia as the pawn. “You think this is me?!” he cries out, grappling with the mounting tension of the episode. “I was told that if I fail, Marcia will die.”

Despite the chaos, Sam isn’t seeking to hurt anyone; he’s a father consumed by grief. The circumstances around Kai’s death remain enigmatic, yet gripping.

Jude Cudjoe’s Departure from Hijack

As for Jude Cudjoe, there has been no official word from him regarding his exit from the show, which was unexpected given the pivotal role he played in Season 1. In discussions with Jim Field Smith, the co-creator, the rationale behind Kai’s death emerges. They wanted to push Sam to a new extreme, but found the list of things that could motivate him was dwindling.

“We had a hard time thinking about what would push Sam to extremes,” Smith shared in a Zoom interview. “I think family motivations resonate with viewers, but we didn’t want to retread old ground with Marcia.”

Smith’s comments suggest that Kai’s fate was primarily a creative decision, and the storyline is still evolving.

Episode 3 Cliffhanger: Who Killed Freddy?

After the devastation of Kai’s death, Episode 3 ends with another stunning cliffhanger involving a new casualty. Leaving Freddy in the driver’s car during a precarious moment, Sam and Otto return only to find him dead. The identity of the murderer is yet unknown, but the show has a knack for hiding key characters in plain sight. Viewers will need to tune in to Season 2, Episode 4 for answers.

A new episode of Hijack drops every Wednesday on Apple TV.
