Browns’ Defensive Coordinator Resignation After Coaching Change
Jim Schwartz, the Browns’ defensive coordinator, has expressed his frustration by resigning following the announcement that Todd Monken would take over as head coach. Sources indicate he was visibly upset and shared his decision with fellow assistants shortly after the news broke.
Schwartz was once seen as a strong candidate for the head coach role himself. Just recently, he garnered attention as a likely favorite, but now he’s poised to leave after a three-year stint in Cleveland. Prior to this, he had built a solid reputation, particularly during his time with the 49ers.
His presence during the coaching search was somewhat controversial. The Browns had hoped he might stay on, especially since his departure could complicate the new coaching staff’s dynamics. There were also whispers that some candidates preferred not to work alongside Schwartz, which raised concerns about team compatibility.
In light of these developments, Schwartz brought in Monken and other offensive coordinators like Grant Wudinski from the Jaguars and Nate Schielhaas of the Rams for interviews as potential replacements. It’s worth noting that Schwartz’s head coaching experience is limited to his tenure with the Lions from 2009 to 2013, where the team faced its own struggles.
Despite Monken’s intention to retain Schwartz, the latter’s resignation will necessitate finding a new coach for a defense featuring standout players like Myles Garrett. In a statement, the Browns expressed their excitement about Monken’s appointment, citing his intelligence, experience, and innovative approach to offense as key aspects of his leadership.
Schwartz has a strong history of coaching effective defensive teams. The Browns ranked fourth in the league for points allowed last season, which could serve him well in future opportunities. However, he is not currently a candidate for coaching roles with the Raiders or Cardinals.
