Rep. Ilhan Omar points to Trump as responsible for syringe attack: ‘So focused on me’

Ilhan Omar Condemns Attack, Links It to Trump

Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) stated that the recent syringe attack on her stemmed from frustrations over the government’s handling of Somali deportations, suggesting that former President Trump played a role in inciting the assault.

Omar mentioned, “The assailant was particularly upset that President Trump’s Somali deportation order hasn’t led to the removal of enough Somalis.” She shared these thoughts during a news conference at Carmel Mall in Minneapolis.

According to Omar, the attacker, identified as Anthony Kazmierczak, 55, targeted her because he believed she was shielding the Somali community.

Kazmierczak approached the stage during an event at City Hall in Minneapolis and used a syringe to spray Omar with a foul-smelling substance, later found to be apple cider vinegar, as per witnesses and video evidence.

Neighbors of Kazmierczak described him as “heavily drugged” and noted his support for Trump. Authorities have detained him on suspicion of third-degree assault.

Fortunately, Omar remained unharmed and continued her speech after the incident. She emphasized that “the facts matter more than the interesting accusations” surrounding the attack.

Omar asserted that her hurdles intensified since Trump took office, as “death threats skyrocketed every time he deployed hateful rhetoric about me or the community I represent.” She pointed out that threats decreased significantly during the four years Trump was not in office but have surged again since he resumed public attacks.

She argued, “If Donald Trump hadn’t been president and obsessed with me, I wouldn’t find myself in this situation, relying on security measures.” She noted that just before the attack, Trump had made comments about her during a rally in Iowa.

Trump, who has previously suggested Omar should “return” to Somalia, reiterated during a rally that she hails from a “terrible country,” adding, “I think people think it’s the worst. It’s not even a country.”

In a follow-up, Trump remarked to ABC News that Omar “probably knew her and was the one who sprayed himself.” The White House has yet to provide a comment on the situation.
