Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar Begins Campaign To Succeed Tim Walz

Klobuchar Declares Candidacy for Minnesota Governor

On Thursday morning, Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota declared her intention to run for governor, hoping to succeed outgoing Gov. Tim Walz.

Klobuchar, who is currently the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate, had established an election committee for her gubernatorial campaign on January 22nd. This move comes after her vocal opposition to the Trump administration, including a recent call for the Department of Justice to collaborate with Minnesota officials on an in-depth investigation into ICE operations related to the death of Renee Goode.

This announcement follows Walz’s decision to step back from his re-election campaign, a choice likely influenced by scrutiny over his administration amid allegations of widespread fraud involving predominantly Somali-owned businesses in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region.

In a statement regarding his decision, Walz claimed that the Trump administration was trying to make Minnesota a “lesser, meaner place,” and noted that he couldn’t dedicate full attention to political campaigns while addressing pressing issues in the state.

Klobuchar noted Walz’s choice to focus on his responsibilities rather than campaigning. At that time, she didn’t reveal any plans of her own regarding a gubernatorial run.

Many within the Democratic Party consider Klobuchar a leading contender in this race should she proceed. The Democratic Party Management Policy Committee might see her as a frontrunner as she moves forward.

Additionally, reports indicate that the Justice Department has issued subpoenas to several Democratic officials in Minnesota, including Gov. Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, part of an ongoing investigation into federal immigration obstruction.

Although Klobuchar still has over four years remaining in her Senate term, she currently has no plans to resign immediately if she launches her gubernatorial campaign. She intends to balance her Senate responsibilities while also campaigning for governor.
