Former Broncos coach discusses changes in team personnel.

The Denver Broncos made significant changes to their coaching staff this week after a tough 10-7 defeat against the New England Patriots.

On Tuesday, they let go of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, wide receivers coach Keely Colbert, and cornerbacks coach Addison Lynch. This decision seems surprising, especially since the team ranked 10th in yards and 14th in points, and notably topped the AFC West with a solid 14-3 record.

Lombardi, who has a notable lineage as the grandson of the legendary Vince Lombardi, was the offensive coordinator just since 2023 and announced his dismissal on Wednesday. He commented, “Sean decided to move on, and I think that’s all there is to say.” He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the NFL, adding, “It’s not surprising at all. You could tell he (Payton) was in one of those moods where he felt changes were necessary.” Lombardi reflected, “I guess I’ve been around him long enough to read the tea leaves.”

Despite the changes, Lombardi dismissed suggestions that he was being made a scapegoat, believing Payton was simply seeking a “different direction.”

At this point, it’s uncertain who the Broncos might consider for the offensive coordinator role moving forward.

Meanwhile, former NFL quarterback Davis Webb is drawing attention as a desirable candidate on this season’s coaching carousel; he currently holds the position of quarterbacks coach for the Broncos.
