CBS News employees are somewhat upset about Gayle King's support for Bari Weiss.

Staff at CBS News are reportedly feeling quite frustrated after Gayle King’s strong defense of her new boss, Bari Weiss, during a recent all-hands meeting. Some speculate that King’s actions may be an attempt to remain relevant and secure her position. An employee mentioned to The Independent that King’s remarks were “totally disappointing,” particularly those that targeted leaks and media narratives about the internal dynamics of the network.

Many expected King to address concerns related to employee morale, potential layoffs, and shifts in editorial policy under Weiss. Instead, a source remarked that defending Weiss seemed to be King’s only focus.

Recently, reports indicated that management might consider moving King to a different position, which would result in a significant pay cut from her current $13 million salary. Employees criticized her for mirroring Weiss’s “take it or leave it” stance, noting that many don’t have the financial flexibility to simply leave their jobs.

One staffer expressed frustration, saying, “Gail, please be a little considerate of the CBS staff.” The employee emphasized that while King has earned substantial income, the majority of employees don’t have the luxury to just walk away from their positions.

Initially, King’s speech was seen as passionate but soon appeared to shift towards her personal views, with the staffer feeling that it reflected Weiss’s belief that those unhappy with the direction could leave. Another employee added, “I think Gail knows that being on ‘CBS Mornings’ is about keeping her attention, but we’re talking about news integrity here.”

Interestingly, there were mixed reactions to King’s comments. Some colleagues felt that the atmosphere during her speech was overwhelmingly positive and saw King as being well-liked among her morning show team. They were surprised when she publicly criticized the “leakers” revealing internal issues to outside sources.

King expressed her desire for open communication, stating, “I’d like to think we’ll be able to have a conversation, so we can be honest with each other.” She added her frustration over the leaks, saying, “I’m sick of that. I’m sick of it!”

In her defense of Weiss, King lauded her boss for creating a strong vision for the network, insisting that those unhappy with current changes were welcome to leave. Weiss also acknowledged the unrest, expressing understanding of employees’ anxieties and stating her intent to build trust through actions, not requests for it.

The situation at CBS News remains tense as they navigate significant changes since Weiss took over last year.
