Texas Police Officer in Critical Condition After Shooting
A police officer from Texas is fighting for his life after being shot in the head by a murder suspect earlier this week.
The event took place around 2:45 p.m. on January 23, when Corpus Christi Police were called to a shooting scene on Ayers Street, which is roughly 245 miles from San Antonio.
Upon arrival, officers found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Not long after, officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle close by and made an attempt to pull it over. But things escalated quickly; the 38-year-old suspect drew a handgun and began firing at the officers.
Reports indicate that during the confrontation, two officers sustained gunshot wounds, while a third was injured by debris. Officer Alexandria Cano-Castro, age 36, suffered life-threatening injuries.
Video footage reportedly shows the moment the officers were ambushed as gunfire erupted, leading to the suspect ultimately being found dead.
Cano-Castro was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. Thankfully, the other officer who was shot is currently stable, and a third officer is recovering from his injuries.
It appears that the suspect was also struck multiple times and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains under guard and is expected to survive.
Authorities have yet to reveal the identities of the suspect or the other officers involved in the incident.
Police Chief Mike Markle commented on the situation, expressing hope for the wounded officers. He noted, “This was a murder suspect, so we were able to find him right away. Unfortunately, it ended like this.” He mentioned prayers for the officers’ recovery.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation is ongoing.
