A legal battle is brewing over the bronze medal of a Romanian gymnast after Jordan Chiles from the U.S. was stripped of hers. Chiles, 24, originally secured third place in the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but Ana Maria Barbos from Romania was awarded the bronze after the Romanian team challenged their scores.
Recently, the Swiss Supreme Court decided to return the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after new evidence came to light.
The pivotal question revolves around whether the U.S. delegation quickly contested Chile’s score in accordance with the rules, which could potentially reverse the medal decision.
The Swiss court has requested CAS to review audio evidence indicating that the challenge from the U.S. was made within the one-minute timeframe specified by regulations. They recognized the “highly exceptional circumstances” surrounding the case and acknowledged that video recordings from the August 5, 2024 match could impact the outcome, possibly benefiting Chile.
One of Chile’s lawyers, Maurice Su, expressed their determination, stating that the gymnasts are prepared to “fight vigorously” for what they believe is their right to the bronze medal, appreciating the chance to advocate for themselves fully.
