Final investigation definitively establishes Hunter Thompson's cause of death after 20 years

Investigation Confirms Hunter S. Thompson’s Death by Suicide

The Colorado authorities have determined that Hunter S. Thompson, the iconic journalist, died by suicide, closing an investigation that was reignited by concerns from his widow about potential foul play following his death in 2005.

A report from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, issued on January 23, indicated they couldn’t validate the various speculative theories that arose around Thompson’s passing. The case is now officially closed.

The investigation clarified that “the body was not moved or ‘staged’ after death,” pointing out Thompson’s struggles with severe depression and chronic pain.

Thompson, who gained fame for works like “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” was found in his Aspen kitchen office at age 67, having taken his own life with a gunshot to the head. Friends and family recall him often discussing thoughts of a self-inflicted death.

However, his wife, Anita, married to him only two years before his passing, raised suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his death, suggesting that family members may have played a role in making it appear like a suicide.

In September, she encouraged the CBI to revisit the investigation, alleging her son and daughter-in-law might have been involved.

As part of the reopened investigation, authorities interviewed several witnesses from the original case and even analyzed the bullet’s trajectory when Thompson’s body was discovered.

Ultimately, there was no evidence supporting Anita’s claims of murder or assisted suicide by family members.

Sheriff Michael Baglione of Pitkin County acknowledged the importance of a thorough investigation for the Thompson family, expressing confidence in the original findings while also valuing the independent inquiry.

Upon learning the results, Anita expressed her appreciation for the CBI’s efforts, stating that it allows those who cared for Thompson to move forward with peace of mind.

Despite her efforts, Anita’s campaign has created tension within the family. Her son Juan has voiced confusion over her insistence on pursuing this issue, feeling that nothing new could emerge regarding his father’s death.

Juan was present in the house when Thompson died, discovering his body, while Anita was speaking with him just moments before. Some reports indicate that Juan even discharged a shotgun into the air in tribute to his father before law enforcement arrived, which raised questions about the integrity of the scene.

In the end, detectives reached the same conclusion as they did over two decades ago: Thompson’s death was a result of suicide.

The sheriff expressed hope that the CBI’s findings would bring clarity and reassurance to those affected by Thompson’s legacy.
