Catherine O’Hara Dies at 71

Hollywood icon Catherine O’Hara, known for her memorable performances in “Schitt’s Creek,” “Home Alone,” and voicing Sally in “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” has passed away at the age of 71.

Her representative confirmed that O’Hara died today at her Los Angeles home following a brief illness. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that they received a call for help at her Brentwood residence around 5 a.m., where she was found in critical condition and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Macaulay Culkin, who played her son in “Home Alone,” expressed his sadness in a heartfelt tribute after news of her passing broke.

O’Hara’s illustrious career, spanning several decades, left a huge mark on Hollywood comedy. She was particularly known for her role as the quirky Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek,” as well as for her standout performance in “Home Alone.”

Originally from Toronto, O’Hara launched her career in sketch and improv comedy. She co-created the groundbreaking show SCTV, later transitioning into a diverse range of film and television roles that solidified her legendary status.

Most recently, she reprised her role as Delia Deetz in “Beetlejuice,” appeared in Season 2 of the acclaimed series “The Last of Us,” and starred in the Apple TV+ comedy “The Studio.” Her work in these projects earned her nominations for several Emmy Awards.

Throughout her career, O’Hara graced many beloved films, including “Beetlejuice,” “Home Alone,” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” She became a beloved figure, especially as the devoted mother in the “Home Alone” series.

Her extensive filmography also includes collaboration with Christopher Guest, where she starred in critically acclaimed mockumentaries like “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show,” earning her recognition as a gifted comedic talent.

Her remarkable role in “For Your Consideration” won her the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2007. O’Hara’s versatility extended to television as well, with guest spots on shows like “Six Feet Under” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and she gained further recognition for her performance in HBO’s “Temple Grandin.”

O’Hara’s roots were in comedy, having begun her journey at Second City Theater in Toronto, where she co-created “SCTV.” Her work on the show earned her an Emmy Award, along with multiple nominations for its groundbreaking writing.

As her career progressed, she achieved significant acclaim for her portrayal of Moira Rose in “Schitt’s Creek,” winning several prestigious awards including an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Catherine O’Hara is survived by her husband, Beau Welch, their sons Matthew and Luke, and her siblings. A private celebration of life will be held with her family.
