Trump Signs Executive Order for Freedom 250 Grand Prix
On January 30, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to initiate the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, marking the first ever professional auto race in Washington, D.C. This event is part of the celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.
In collaboration with Roger Penske, the owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and various racing teams including IndyCar and NASCAR, the race is scheduled for August 21-23.
Trump expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s going to be very exciting. I love racing. I don’t have much time to watch races, but I love racing.”
Penske added, “There’s no better way to bring cars and speed to the Washington, D.C., area and the opportunity to compete with IndyCar here.”
The planned route will include the National Mall. According to an IndyCar news release, the executive order permits the Department of Transportation and the Department of the Interior to designate a race route suitable for showcasing the beauty of the nation’s capital in honor of the 250th anniversary of American independence.
This announcement follows the introduction of the Freedom 250 campaign by Trump, described as a movement celebrating America’s long history.
During his second term, Trump has shown a keen interest in sports, with much of his travel focusing on significant games and events, such as the NCAA Football National Championship held recently in Miami Gardens, Florida.
As mentioned in a White House statement, the race “will showcase the beauty and grandeur of Washington, D.C., while demonstrating American ingenuity in engineering, technology, and high-performance racing.”
The event aims to bring premier auto racing to the heart of the capital, celebrating American history and fostering inspiration for future generations, according to the statement.
Trump has urged for the best possible race route through the streets of Washington, even if the logistics present challenges.
He remarked, “I said we would choose the best site. That is very important. Choose the absolute best site, even if it is more difficult to get approval.”
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who attended the signing ceremony, noted, “If you think about it, going 190 miles an hour down Pennsylvania Avenue would be crazy.”
The race is set to be held from August 21 to 23, 2026, and will be free for public viewing.
The campaign begins with a New Year’s Eve event at the Washington Monument, featuring a light show and fireworks, representing Trump’s aspiration to create “the best birthday in American history.”
Duffy stated, “Now we’re going to have a real race. Freedom, America, speed, and road racing. There’s nothing more American than that.”
