South Carolina, Georgia, Florida call off various events because of freezing temperatures

While snow-related cancellations are typical for the Northeast, states like South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida have also had to cancel or delay significant events this weekend due to an intense cold snap. Meteorologists predicted winter weather stretching from the Carolinas to the Northeast and New England, which was expected to disrupt travel this Saturday and Sunday.

In light of the anticipated severe weather, airlines took precautionary measures, resulting in a significant number of flight cancellations leading into the weekend. By Saturday afternoon, over 12,000 flights had been delayed or canceled across the U.S., as reported by FlightAware. This tally reflects disruptions from Friday through the following Monday.

Interestingly, many of the cancellations were from regions not typically associated with snow-related issues. In fact, areas in Florida received warnings about dangerously cold winds, with temperatures plunging as low as 8 degrees below zero, which can lead to frostbite in a short time.

The National Weather Service cautioned that exposure to these frigid temperatures poses significant risks, particularly for young children, the elderly, and those without shelter. The cold snap impacted various children’s activities throughout the Southeast, leading theme parks like Disney and Universal to close their water attractions.

Though Zoo Miami planned to stay open, some animals were kept indoors for warmth. The chill is significant enough that some forecasts predict Miami could tie its record low temperature set over a century ago.

In Georgia, popular attractions such as the Georgia Aquarium and Zoo Atlanta also closed. Similarly, performances from the Ringling Bros. circus scheduled in North Carolina were called off due to severe weather conditions.

1. Polar Plunge, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach’s annual Polar Plunge, a charity event where participants jump into the cold Atlantic Ocean, was scrapped due to the harsh weather conditions. Organizers noted that heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions were anticipated throughout the weekend.

2. Braves Fest, Atlanta, Georgia

Braves Fest, which normally attracts thousands of fans, has been canceled as well. Organizers expressed disappointment but prioritized safety due to the expected severe weather.

3. Aqueduct Racecourse Weekend Horse Racing, Queens, New York

The New York Racing Association also canceled horseracing at Aqueduct Racetrack this weekend, adding to the list of events disrupted by the weather. Prior cancellations had already affected the schedule leading up to this weekend.

4. Penguin Plunge, West Hartford, CT

In Connecticut, the Penguin Plunge fundraiser was postponed due to the icy conditions. This event, which involves local police officers jumping into a pool for charity, is now rescheduled for March, although the specific date is yet to be announced.

All around the region, it seems that the severe weather has thrown a wrench into many plans, with safety measures taking center stage as the weekend unfolds.
