NBA Fines Coach for Conduct During Game
The NBA announced on Saturday that Cleveland Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson has been fined $50,000 due to what the league described as “aggressively pursuing, abusing, and inadvertently contacting a game official.”
This incident took place with 10:59 remaining in the fourth quarter during the Cavaliers’ 126-113 defeat to the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Atkinson received his second technical foul after he collided with a referee while reacting to a no-call involving Sam Merrill, who was driving against Colin Gillespie, leading to his removal from the game.
Atkinson was seen expressing his frustration by making contact with the referee’s arm before the whistle was blown. He didn’t hold back during the post-game press conference either, criticizing the officials for their performance.
“We made just one free throw after the third quarter against a team that is ranked 26th in fouls. The second one we got was a result of a flop,” Atkinson said. “Honestly, I think the game had spiraled out of control. Some moments felt almost like a circus, which is not what we want in this league.”
He elaborated on his concerns about game management, saying, “Some players take liberties, and we don’t hold them accountable. Instead, we spend too much time looking at monitors and reviewing plays when all we want to do is play basketball.”
As it stands, the Cavaliers hold a record of 29 wins and 21 losses, while the Suns improved their standings to 30 wins and 19 losses.
