Tennis commentators have criticized the Australian Open for an uncomfortable moment during the trophy presentation for coach Elena Rybakina.
The Kazakh player triumphed in a thrilling final against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, achieving her first Australian Open title after staging a comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the third set, finishing the match at 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Sabalenka was visibly upset as her chance at the Daphne Akherst Memorial Cup slipped away, while Rybakina quietly celebrated with a fist pump after a critical serve.
Although this marks Rybakina’s second Grand Slam title, having previously won at Wimbledon in 2022, the moment she embraced her coach, Stefano Vukov, sparked unease among commentators.
Many felt the atmosphere shift when Vukov was called to the podium for the winning coach’s trophy. He accepted it from past champion Jennifer Capriati, taking his place on stage, which only heightened the tension.
Vukov, known for coaching Rybakina to victory at Wimbledon, has a controversial past, having faced suspension for alleged conduct violations. There were reports of him being abusive towards players, a claim he has denied. Rybakina expressed her anger regarding these allegations at the time.
She stated, “I always said he never abused me.” Vukov returned to her coaching team after his suspension was lifted last August.
The New York Times reported sources indicating that Rybakina and Vukov, who is twelve years older than her, had a romantic relationship during the 2025 Australian Open, when she was under suspension. Vukov began working with her when she was just a teenager.
Instances occurred where Rybakina’s team decided to separate her from Vukov during the 2024 U.S. Open, prompting him to attempt to reconnect with her against their wishes.
This background made his appearance during the ceremony particularly jarring. Commentator Catherine Whittaker noted, “It was an awkward and uncomfortable moment watching Stefano accept the trophy.” She deemed the introduction of the coaching award a “misfire,” suggesting that the situation had poor optics.
Co-host Matt Roberts agreed, observing that the audience seemed uneasy, with subdued applause indicating their apprehension. “I thought a lot of people knew the history of Vukov,” he remarked.
During the post-match conference, Rybakina was asked about Vukov’s involvement. She responded modestly, focusing on her team’s achievements and expressing hope for future successes. “I’m really happy,” she said, emphasizing her pride in their shared victories.
Interestingly, while Rybakina showcased a humble demeanor, smiling and waving to the audience, her opponent Sabalenka was seen covering her face with a towel, reflecting a stark contrast in their reactions after the match.
