Bob Chesney’s First Appearance at UCLA

Before even saying a word, Bob Chesney made an impression.

As the newly appointed UCLA football coach stepped onto the court during a timeout at the Bruins’ basketball game against Indiana, the audience at Pauley Pavilion erupted in applause and cheers.

The excitement was palpable.

“I want everyone to support this team, to grasp what we’re building here, and to believe we’re going to win a Big Ten championship,” Chesney declared.

Fans cheered even louder as he looked around, nodding and waving his arms to further hype the crowd.

“This is the team of the future,” he continued, with enthusiasm. “That future starts now. Go Bruins!”

Those are hefty expectations, especially given the history of UCLA football. The team hasn’t won a conference championship since 1998 and has struggled with an 8-16 record over the past two seasons.

Yet, Chesney brings a solid track record. He’s enjoyed success from the Division III level all the way to his recent tenure at James Madison, where he guided the Dukes to the Sun Belt Conference Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

He shares the same lofty goals as the Bruins’ spirit.

“In my short time here, I haven’t encountered anything average at UCLA. I didn’t come here to settle for average,” he said confidently.

The 48-year-old coach also recognized his assistants, referring to them as “the best staff in the world.” Following his remarks, numerous players joined him on the court for a T-shirt toss, further engaging the crowd.

Chesney wrapped up his appearance on the video board beside Jim Harrick, who coached the last UCLA basketball team to a national title back in 1995, leaving the audience buzzing with excitement.
