Donovan Richards parts ways with Mamdani to advocate for dismantling homeless encampments

Moves to Address Homelessness in New York City

In a surprising turn, even the allies of left-handed Mayor Zoran Mamdani are voicing their concerns about the homeless situation, emphasizing the need to relocate those in precarious conditions and dismantle makeshift shelters to prevent potential fatalities in the harsh winter.

Democratic Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, who supported Mamdani during last year’s election, expressed his views, stating, “Homelessness should not be a death sentence.” He emphasized that “we can’t let people stay there. These are people who are at risk.”

Recently, it was reported that Mamdani’s administration had instructed city police and sanitation workers to halt the demolition of a homeless encampment. This decision came shortly after 14 individuals were discovered deceased outdoors amid severe cold conditions.

Notably, at least eight of those fatalities were attributed to hypothermia or extreme freezing.

Staten Island Borough Republican Party Chairman Vito Fosella has echoed Richards’ call for a shift in Mamdani’s approach. “We used to say people were going to die, and now it looks like this policy is causing more deaths,” he remarked. He further pointed out that encampments pose threats even during warmer weather due to elevated crime and substance abuse.

“Don’t be surprised if more people die,” he cautioned.

Richards also weighed in, stressing, “I think the mayor needs to get rid of the encampment.” However, he added that this should be accomplished in a humane manner. He noted that the previous administration under Mayor Eric Adams sometimes mishandled encampment removals, including the disposal of homeless individuals’ belongings.

The crucial point remains that people should not be left exposed to the biting cold, he argued. Richards highlighted a significant issue; many homeless individuals choose to stay on the streets rather than seeking shelter, fearing for their safety. “That’s a big reason why they’re coming out on the streets and in the subways. We have to solve this problem in the long term,” he said. “It’s so cold outside. It’s bone-chilling even during the day. It’s a sad situation.”

City Hall has yet to provide a comment regarding these pressing concerns.
