Jason Kidd Defends Cooper Flagg’s Role After Rockets Loss

Following a tough 111-107 loss to the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd expressed his frustration regarding the way Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick, is being utilized. The criticism surrounding Flagg’s role seemed to ignite Kidd’s ire, leading to some impassioned comments.

Flagg, a standout from Duke, has been predominantly deployed as a point guard in Kidd’s system, despite many observers believing he’s better suited as a forward. At 6-foot-9, he has the agility to manage the offense, yet the debate about his position continues.

When pressed about the criticism he’s faced, Kidd responded directly, sharing, “I don’t think anything about criticism. That’s your opinion. You write that you’re bullish, but…” He emphasized his experience, stating, “I’ve played this game. I know what I’m doing.”

Kidd, a decorated Hall of Famer with ten All-Star titles, has transitioned smoothly to coaching after an illustrious playing career, including stints with the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. He has been leading the Mavericks since the start of the 2021-22 season, a franchise he knows well from his playing days.

Amidst the scrutiny, Kidd didn’t shy away from taking a hard stance against media criticism. “I don’t care what you guys write,” he asserted, underscoring that his focus remains on developing players, like Flagg. “When I get criticism, it only makes me better,” he added, suggesting that he welcomes the challenge to improve.

After the game, rather than lingering in discussions, Kidd quickly retreated to the locker room, perhaps still stewing from the loss. Flagg has had a rocky start in the NBA but is gradually finding his footing, averaging nearly 20 points a game this season, making him a contender for Rookie of the Year honors.

Despite Flagg’s performance, the Mavericks are currently facing difficulties, having lost four consecutive games and sitting at 11th place in the Western Conference with a record of 19-30. Their struggles have been exacerbated by injuries, particularly to Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from a torn ACL. Kidd has had to adapt by utilizing both Flagg and D’Angelo Russell more heavily in the point guard role.

With injuries plaguing the team and high expectations on Flagg’s shoulders, Kidd is determined to see the rookie’s development continue, all while managing the pressures of both coaching and navigating team dynamics.
