Vic Fangio's unclear retirement brings a new twist to the tumultuous Eagles offseason

The Eagles’ Offseason Drama Continues

The Philadelphia Eagles’ offseason is shaping up to be quite dramatic. There’s a possibility that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio may retire after a season that saw them exit in the wild card round against the 49ers. However, as of now, the team hasn’t gotten a clear answer from him yet, according to reports.

The chatter suggests that while Fangio has some ideas for 2026, he might reconsider his position. Last year, he brought up retirement too, but ultimately chose to return to the team.

Everything seems a bit uncertain, prompting the Eagles to start exploring alternative options in case Fangio decides to step away. They had their eyes on reuniting with Jonathan Gannon, who previously served as the Eagles’ DC before moving on to the Cardinals. Gannon was recently let go after a rough stint, not one that most would envy.

Additionally, the team is looking at Jim Schwartz. He’s reportedly not happy after being let go from the Browns’ head coach position and is considered someone they might reach out to. The Browns have moved on, hiring Todd Monken as their new head coach.

This offseason has been far from smooth for the Eagles. After winning the Super Bowl last year, they’ve faced various challenges, including an offense that hasn’t exactly shined. Notably, receiver AJ Brown has voiced some concerns about his role. Despite going 11-6 and capturing the NFC East title for the third time in four years, they faced disappointment in the playoffs.

In response to the season’s struggles, head coach Nick Sirianni made a significant change, letting go of Kevin Pattullo as the offensive coordinator. It’s still unclear if Pattullo will stay on with the team in some capacity. The Eagles have already brought in Sean Mannion to take over that position.

On another note, they lost passing game coordinator Christian Parker to the Cowboys, who appointed him as their new defensive coordinator, which further complicates their search for Fangio’s potential replacement.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo had previously indicated that Fangio was contemplating retirement after the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory. It seems that more discussions will take place in the future, pending Fangio’s ultimate decision.
