Charles Barkley Discusses Paul George’s 25-Game Suspension

Paul George has received a 25-game suspension for breaching the NBA’s anti-drug policy. Charles Barkley, a former member of the Philadelphia 76ers and now a prominent sports commentator, shared his thoughts on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA” during a pregame segment for the Mavericks vs. Rockets game.

“Something doesn’t add up here,” Barkley remarked. “I mean, I take mental health seriously. If someone is using medication for mental health purposes, it seems unusual for the NBA. If you’re in that situation, I think, maybe, you should be excused—even if that medication is on the prohibited list.”

In his response to the suspension, George didn’t deny the positive test for banned substances. He acknowledged his involvement, expressing remorse for the situation. “I’ve often spoken about the importance of mental health,” he said. “Recently, while addressing my own issues, I mistakenly took the wrong medication.”

He went on to accept full responsibility, apologizing to the 76ers, his teammates, and the Philadelphia fans. “I’m committed to using this time to get my mind and body prepared to support the team when I return,” he stated.

Currently, the 76ers hold the sixth position in the Eastern Conference, with a record of 27 wins and 21 losses.

This season, George has contributed significantly, averaging 16.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game over 27 starts. Although his numbers have dipped slightly compared to prior seasons, the team has benefited from the addition of their recent high draft pick, VJ Edgecomb, as well as the improved health of star player Joel Embiid and the standout performance from Tyrese Maxey.

Barkley’s remarks highlight the nuances in sports regulations, especially concerning mental health. George, who is currently in his 16th season, will be turning 36 in May.
