Shooting in Georgia hotel room results in one officer's death and another's serious injury

Georgia Officer Shooting Incident

A man in Georgia reportedly fired at two police officers while they were questioning him at a hotel on Sunday, resulting in the death of one officer and serious injuries to another, as confirmed by authorities.

The individual, identified as Kevin Andrews, 35, from Decatur, was also injured during the exchange of gunfire. Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure stated in a press conference that Andrews was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. Once he is released, he’ll be taken into custody at the county jail.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a Holiday Inn Express located near Stone Mountain, roughly 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, two officers responded to the hotel after officials from South Carolina reported that a credit card had been used fraudulently there. The officers spoke with a front desk employee, who mentioned that the room was rented by Andrews.

When the officers learned that there was an active warrant for Andrews from DeKalb County related to a failure to appear, they headed to his room to make an arrest.

Chief McClure mentioned that Andrews welcomed the officers into his room. They began a conversation about various incidents when, unexpectedly, Andrews pulled out a handgun and opened fire on one of the officers.

The officers involved in this incident were identified as Pradeep Tamang and David Reid. Tragically, Officer Tamang, aged 25, later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. He had only recently joined the police force in 2024. Officer Reid, on the other hand, was reported to be in serious but stable condition after being hospitalized; he has been with the department since 2015.

Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences over Tamang’s death, calling him a “brave officer” and wishing a quick recovery for Reid. He remarked on the everyday dangers facing law enforcement, emphasizing gratitude for those who risk their lives to protect the community.

Andrews now faces several charges, including one count of malicious murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a public safety officer, and one count of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which typically handles cases involving police shootings in the state. Once completed, the case will be forwarded to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
