Minneapolis Teachers Union Takes Stand Against ICE
In a recent interview, the president of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators, Marcia Howard, expressed her views on local elected officials taking part in the city’s anti-ICE movement.
Howard remarked, “There’s this idea that people involved with ICE are trying to safeguard their community, joining chat groups, running license plates, and patrolling. It’s as if we feel ashamed for doing this, and that showing our faces might distance us from our neighborhoods.” This commentary was aired last week.
Howard, known for her defense of the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s death, has been an educator for 25 years. She is recognized as the “custodian” of George Floyd Square, the memorial site for Floyd, where she engages daily with local activists.
“Our bosses are in Signal chat with us,” she noted. “Our elected officials are communicating with us too.”
She elaborated on the involvement of local residents—like “nanas, hockey coaches, and soccer moms”—in resisting federal immigration enforcement, many of whom have their own criminal records. “Everyone is stepping up to support their neighbors, which is how we function in Minneapolis and St. Paul,” she added.
Howard also pointed out that teachers are taking part in efforts to challenge federal law enforcement activities. “We have whistles and cell phones to make sure students can reach class safely,” she explained. However, she described the situation as deteriorating, claiming that authorities are escalating their aggressive tactics against the community.
She went on to liken federal immigration agents to slave catchers and the Ku Klux Klan, asserting, “They’ve waged war on my state and city.”
