Profile describing Gavin Newsom as 'awkwardly attractive' sparks ridicule

California Governor Newsom’s Vogue Profile Sparks Controversy

California’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, drew criticism after being described as “embarrassingly handsome” in a recent Vogue profile. The article opens with a rather lavish compliment, noting his “silver, coiffed hair” and how he exudes confidence while addressing his final State of the State speech.

With his term concluding in 2026, Newsom is already seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race. Some observers believe his appeal could irritate former President Trump. The profile paints him as energetic and optimistic, describing his life with a supportive family and his experience leading a complex and affluent state.

However, not everything in the piece sits well with some critics. Bloomberg TV’s Anne-Marie Hordern highlights that even though California boasts one of the world’s largest economies, it also suffers from high unemployment rates, second only to Washington, D.C. The opening line of the Vogue piece has already become a talking point.

Interestingly, the profile omits several critical issues, including the wildfires in Los Angeles. The journalist conveys that while Newsom is capable of surprising insights, there are significant topics they couldn’t cover, including corporate consolidation and homelessness. It’s an echo of the complexity surrounding political discussions today.

Others have weighed in critically on the article. Nathan Brand, an advisor to Senator Tim Scott, remarked that the portrayal was “embarrassing even for Vogue.” In a similar vein, Byron York from the Washington Examiner noted the profile’s more flattering aspects, as well as its “Kennedy-esque” praise of Newsom.

Conservative commentator Steve Guest found the profile’s hyperbole distasteful, leading him to voice his displeasure. Comments from other media figures, like NewsBusters editor Curtis Hawk, suggest a broad consensus of criticism surrounding the portrayal of the governor.

Adding to the mix, White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson commented on the piece, drawing parallels to past high-profile profiles, indicating a measure of skepticism about the framing of Newsom’s public persona.

Some have gone so far as to label the profile as bordering on “erotic fan fiction,” showcasing the wide-reaching impact of how political figures are represented in media.
