Mexican Officials Respond to Shocking Reports on 'Invisible Coup'

Mexican officials are responding to an investigation by journalist Peter Schweitzer, who claims in his latest book, The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon, that there are connections between groups protesting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Mexican government.

In an interview on FOX Business with Maria Bartiromo, Mexican Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragan refuted claims made by Schweitzer about alleged links between these groups and Mexican authorities.

Schweitzer stated during the interview, “We know that foreign powers like Mexico are actively involved in what they call ‘resistance against Donald Trump.’ These aren’t my words; they’re from Mexican officials residing in the U.S.”

He highlighted that several anti-ICE organizations reportedly have ties to the Mexican consulate.

Moctezuma rejected these allegations, claiming that Mexican authorities are cooperating with the Trump administration on immigration challenges.

“Facts speak louder than opinions. When he claims we’re opposing President Trump, that’s not accurate. The Latino vote for President Trump increased from 28% in 2016 to 48% in 2020,” Moctezuma remarked.

The situation, however, tells a different story. Since 2000, Mexican immigration has continuously declined. The governments of Mexico and the U.S. are collaborating closely on immigration, which Trump has often emphasized by stating, “Our border is the most secure in the world.”

Additionally, there has been a 27% reduction in fentanyl overdose deaths in the U.S., attributed to President Sheinbaum’s firm stance against Mexican cartels. Mexico is contributing solutions rather than being a part of the problem.

Recently, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico dismissed Schweitzer’s allegations, referring to investigative journalists as merely “people who write books.”

She stated, “Consulates have specific duties under international law, particularly to assist and protect Mexican citizens in the U.S. That’s their primary function. We firmly deny any involvement in U.S. politics. We expect non-intervention from other countries and adhere to that principle ourselves.”

Schweitzer argues that the Mexican government, which operates over 50 consulates in the U.S., is collaborating with political advisers to influence American politics by potentially mobilizing legal and illegal immigrants for their interests.

He recalled when former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited U.S. cities in early 2017 to rally Mexicans against Trump’s immigration policies, which he believed were harmful to cartel interests.

Schweitzer noted that AMLO even suggested transforming the Mexican consulate into a center for defending immigration rights, targeting U.S. policies directly, marking an unusual approach from a neighboring nation.

“AMLO was not just supporting immigration causes but actively seeking to influence electoral outcomes in the U.S.,” Schweitzer commented. “This degree of interference from a foreign leader is unprecedented, particularly from a country not engaged in conflict with the U.S.”

Schweitzer’s book, The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon, has topped the New York Times Bestseller list.
