Today host Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing over the weekend.
Her family notified authorities around noon on Sunday after she was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area on Saturday night, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona.
Following a search of the home, Sheriff Chris Nanos mentioned at a news conference on Monday that they found elements in the house that raised concerns, leading them to treat the area as a potential crime scene.
“She didn’t leave on her own, we know that,” Nanos added.
The sheriff mentioned that Nancy Guthrie has some physical issues which limit her mobility but does not have any cognitive impairments. He also warned that she is on medication that “could be fatal” if not taken within 24 hours.
During the briefing, he urged residents to check their home security cameras.
“So we implore anyone who knows anything—who saw or heard something—to contact us and call 911,” he said.
Sergeant David Stivers from the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Team also indicated that investigators discovered “circumstances that appear to be suspicious in nature.”
Authorities have secured Nancy Guthrie’s cellphone and are reviewing the security footage from her home.
On Monday’s “Today” show, host Craig Melvin read a message regarding Savannah Guthrie’s mother.
“On behalf of my family, I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” he said on air. “For now, our focus is on the safe return of our beloved mother.”
“We appreciate the efforts of law enforcement in this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900,” the statement continued.
Meanwhile, an NBCUniversal spokesperson confirmed early Monday that Nancy Guthrie was missing and noted that the family was “working closely with local law enforcement.”
The FBI is also assisting in the investigation.
