Documentary on Melania Trump Exceeds Expectations
The documentary “Melania” managed to surpass expectations on its opening day, garnering significant praise from viewers while facing criticism from reviewers.
Ticket sales generated $7 million, positioning the film as the third-highest grossing at the domestic box office, trailing only behind two major studio releases.
“To say ‘Melania’ is a hagiography would be an insult to hagiography,” remarked one critic.
This film, which explores the life of Melania Trump in the lead-up to President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, had an extensive release across 1,778 theaters in the U.S., a noteworthy reach for a documentary.
Before its release, outlets like People anticipated that the film would earn between $3 million and $5 million.
Reviews published post-release leaned toward the negative side, despite the film not being previewed for critics beforehand. Various critics, including those from The Guardian, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter, described the documentary as politically biased and overly flattering.
Xan Brooks from The Guardian compared it to “a medieval eulogy to appease a greedy king on the throne.” Owen Gleiberman from Variety called it a “cheeseball infomercial of incredible inertia,” while Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter maintained that labeling it a hagiography was an insult to the genre itself.
However, audience reactions differed significantly. The film received an “A” rating on the Cinema Score, a metric based on verified exit polls from theaters nationwide.
The documentary was distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, which reportedly allocated $40 million for distribution rights and an additional $35 million for marketing efforts.
This substantial financial commitment made “Melania” the most costly documentary released to date. Analysts from the Associated Press noted that high-cost political documentaries are often judged more by their ability to raise awareness and engage viewers than by standard profit metrics.
The film debuted at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., drawing attendance from lawmakers, cabinet members, and business leaders.
After its theatrical run, “Melania” will also be available on Prime Video, though its international theatrical distribution is anticipated to be limited.
