MP Stands Trial for Citing Bible Verse - Guest Commentary

In today’s world, it seems like most people can express their thoughts freely without facing consequences. The First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution guarantees this right, allowing individuals to speak without fear of government interference. Yet, some perspectives differ—notably that of Paivi Rasanen, a Finnish parliament member, who has expressed concerns over recent developments in Europe.

Rasanen, currently awaiting a ruling from the Supreme Court after tweeting a Bible verse, is also set to testify before the U.S. Congress. Her address will focus on advocating for tighter restrictions on speech in Europe, particularly regarding religious expression.

The 66-year-old has encountered significant challenges, especially as she prepares to speak before the House Judiciary Committee in Washington during hearings on foreign censorship. The discussions under the title “European Threats to Speech and Innovation: Part II” will delve into European laws and rights, featuring legal insights from expert Lorcan Price.

Her legal troubles trace back to comments made in 2019, specifically referencing Romans 1:24-27. This tweet raised eyebrows by questioning the support the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland provided for LGBT events. Following this incident, a criminal investigation was launched after a police complaint, resulting in charges of sedition against minorities.

In October 2025, a lower court acquitted Rasanen, but the defense’s course of action remains unclear. Nevertheless, Rasanen stands firm, saying, “I am here to not only defend my own freedom of speech but also to stand up for everyone’s right to express their deeply held beliefs without the threat of punishment.”
