Meryl Streep Reprises Her Role as Miranda Priestly
It’s been twenty years since the original film, and now “The Devil Wears Prada” is making a comeback with a sequel set to premiere on May 1st.
In contrast to her character Miranda Priestly, who appears to thrive in her high-powered role, Streep was more than ready to retire her fashionable heels right after filming wrapped.
She shared with Vogue that stepping back into the character’s wardrobe prompted quite the nostalgia. “As someone who has held the position for 20 years, she maintained her style but evolved with time like we all do,” Streep noted. “But honestly, I almost got PTSD from wearing high heels for 16 weeks. I feel like I should get the Medal of Freedom!”
Reflecting on her return to Priestly’s iconic outfits, Streep remarked, “It was like going to the back of your closet, rummaging around, and thinking, ‘Oh, I wonder if this still fits?'”
Stanley Tucci resonated with Streep’s reflections, commenting, “The costumes are integral to the character, especially in this movie.”
The wardrobe of “The Devil Wears Prada” has gained a cherished reputation, largely due to its timeless quality—this was, quite intentionally, the vision of costume designer Molly Rogers. She conveyed, “We have a really great roadmap. I love the costumes in the first movie because they’re timeless. There’s no such thing as ‘looking 14 years old.’ I aimed to retain that while offering a broader perspective with this new collection.”
Anne Hathaway also described the electric energy that Streep brought to the set. “Meryl, as Miranda, began striding down the hallway ahead of me—about 50 feet in front—and it was like stepping into a time machine. In that moment, I felt 22 again, yet very much present. Thankfully, she wasn’t in character the entire time, so we shared a lot of laughs.”
While Andy Sachs returns with her own fashion flair, Miranda Priestly will undoubtedly remain the reigning queen of style.
