Heavily Armed Iranian Boats Try to Take Control of US Tanker

Iranian Gunboat Attempts to Seize U.S.-Flagged Tanker

On Tuesday, tensions escalated in the Strait of Hormuz when an Iranian gunboat tried to seize a U.S.-flagged oil tanker. This incident comes amid increasing friction between Iran and the United States.

The tanker, identified as Stena Instructions, was approached by an armed vessel connected to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps while it was navigated in international waters. There were serious concerns about a potential boarding, but fortunately, the tanker kept its course and is currently being escorted by the USS McFaul, along with support from U.S. Air Force air defense.

“CENTCOM forces are committed to ensuring the safety of U.S. personnel, ships, and aircraft in the Middle East,” stated Colonel Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for CENTCOM. He added that Iran’s ongoing harassment in international waters is unacceptable, warning that such actions could lead to conflict or miscalculation.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO), part of the Royal Navy, confirmed the incident. They noted that several armed vessels had stopped the ship. Authorities are investigating and advising vessels in the area to remain alert and report any unusual activity.

Following this, Iran’s state-run Fars News Agency claimed that the tanker had entered Iranian waters without authorization and was subsequently seized.

This standoff occurs as the Trump administration deliberates potential military responses to Iran’s recent actions, particularly following a crackdown on protests earlier in the year. President Trump has hinted that military action may occur if Iran fails to engage in negotiations over a nuclear deal or proceeds to execute protesters.

In response to the rising tensions, the U.S. is deploying more aircraft and naval resources to the region, including the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which is equipped with F-35 fighter jets and missile defense systems.

On January 28, the president emphasized that a “massive armada” was prepared to act if necessary.

While regional leaders are pushing for a diplomatic resolution, Iranian officials have threatened to cancel an upcoming meeting between U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, scheduled for Friday in Turkey.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, warned that any U.S. military action could lead to a wider “regional war.”

The Department of the Army has not yet commented on the situation.
