Grizzlies trade Jared Jackson Jr. to Jazz in significant NBA deal

Different Futures for Lottery Teams

The Jazz and Grizzlies are clearly charting different paths as they look toward the future.

Recently, Utah acquired Jaren Jackson Jr. along with three other players from Memphis. They also received three first-round picks in the process. This move positions the Grizzlies to have 13 first-round picks over the next seven years, which is quite a haul, according to ESPN.

Meanwhile, the Jazz seem set for a potential return to competitiveness. This trade could boost their chances of making the playoffs for the first time since the 2021-22 season.

It’s a bit surprising, I think, that Jackson, who many expected to land with a contender, is heading to a struggling Jazz team with a 15-35 record. They’re quite a ways from the play-in tournament.

This trade also granted the Grizzlies a record $28.8 million trade exception, which is definitely noteworthy. The Jazz additionally welcomed John Conchar, Jock Landale, and Vince Williams Jr. in return for Memphis, who gets Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, and Georges Niang.

The contrast in strategies between the two teams is apparent. Utah seems focused on rebuilding their playoff hopes, while Memphis appears to be fully embracing a rebuild. Interestingly, Lauri Markkanen, Ace Bailey (2025 first-round pick), and Keyontae George (2023 first-round pick) represent a promising frontcourt for the Jazz.

Jackson might take over from Walker Kessler, who’s sidelined for the season with an injury, or they could team up next year to strengthen the Jazz further.

Having been a first-round pick in 2018, Jackson is in his eighth season and currently averages 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds over 45 games—his career average stands at 18.5 points.

This leads to questions about the state of the Grizzlies; will Ja Morant be next in line to be traded? They traded Desmond Bane to the Magic for a first-round pick and a swap earlier this season, and with a 19-29 record, it seems like a complete rebuild might be looming for Memphis.

So, it appears Memphis is committed to their strategy, bringing in more first-round picks, while Morant could possibly fetch additional assets or promising young talent for the future.
