Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of NFL star Patrick Mahomes, is back in custody, reportedly for violating probation due to intoxication. He was booked into Smith County Jail on Tuesday.
Currently, Mahomes Sr. is serving a five-year suspended sentence for driving under the influence, stemming from an arrest on February 3, 2024, in Tyler, Texas. At that time, his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was recorded at 0.23.
He received probation in September of the same year, but if he violates the terms of his suspended sentence, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Police footage from the incident shows Mahomes Sr. pleading with officers, frequently mentioning his son’s preparations for the Super Bowl. “Can I tell you something?” he asked as he was being handcuffed. “My son is preparing to play in the Super Bowl.”
During the arrest, he acknowledged having had a drink or two but insisted he was not drunk and expressed concern about how this situation could affect his son and the Kansas City Chiefs. “I’m not drunk, I promise,” he stated. “He can’t have this right now. That can’t be happening.”
Mahomes Sr. also mentioned that the vehicle he was driving was a gift and that the registration would be sorted out soon, “within the next day or two.”
Reflecting on this incident, he expressed that it was one of the most embarrassing moments of his life. He even reached out to his son afterward to apologize, saying, “I’m sorry for taking up your time and taking away your focus.” In the end, it’s a situation that perhaps underscored the pressures surrounding both father and son during a pinnacle moment in their lives.
