Patriots' Gonzalez faces Seahawks' Smith-Njigba in the Super Bowl

Super Bowl LX Features Texas Talent

One of the highlight matchups in Super Bowl LX is set to showcase two young players from Texas who were drafted just three picks apart in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Christian Gonzalez, a cornerback for the Patriots, will go head-to-head with Jackson Smith-Njiba, a wide receiver for the Seahawks, in a game that could significantly impact the outcome. Both athletes have quickly risen to stardom within their respective teams.

Gonzalez, selected 17th overall from Oregon State, played in 14 games this season, notching 69 tackles and defending 10 passes. He’s proven to be a sharp, effective shutdown corner.

On the other hand, Smith-Njiba was taken 20th overall from Ohio State and had a standout season with 119 receptions for a league-high 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the Seahawks’ two playoff games leading up to the Super Bowl, he recorded 13 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

Gonzalez is no stranger to Smith-Njiba’s talents; he’s been following him since their high school days in the Dallas area. “It’s a big place, but it’s not that big,” Gonzalez remarked, showing his respect. “I have seen him play since high school. I’m excited for him. It’s going to be a fun game.”

Smith-Njiba, stepping onto such a significant stage at just 23, expressed his gratitude. “It’s a blessing. I don’t take it for granted,” he said. “Many great players never get this opportunity, so I’m determined to make the most of it.”

Facing off against Gonzalez adds an extra layer to that challenge. “I respect him as a player,” Smith-Njiba noted. “It’s going to be a great matchup.”

In terms of impact, if Smith-Njiba manages a game surpassing nine catches for over 140 yards, it could signal a strong performance by the Seahawks. Gonzalez, standing 6-foot-1 and known for his athleticism, will aim to contain him. If he can effectively corner Smith-Njiba, it could lead the Patriots to their seventh Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Gonzalez shared his anticipation for the matchup, praising Smith-Njiba’s skills. “He can do anything from anywhere on the field,” he said. “He’s a smooth route runner and a great player.”

Conversely, Smith-Njiba also had high praise for Gonzalez. “He’s an elite defender,” he remarked. “A very well-rounded cornerback capable of doing so much.” Finding ways to outmaneuver him will be a challenge that Smith-Njiba seems ready to embrace. “It’s like a chess match,” he said, comparing the strategy involved to basketball—being open and anticipating the defender’s thoughts.

The Patriots might have some strategies to counter Smith-Njiba’s versatility. Coach Mike Vrabel highlighted his competitive nature, suggesting that zone coverage might be effectively employed against him. Statistics indicate that the Seahawks’ wide receivers see a significant drop in target rates against zone coverage, suggesting that the Patriots could adjust their defensive approach throughout the game.

Given Smith-Njiba’s multifaceted role, Gonzalez emphasized that the plan would be adaptable. “Whatever D.C. asks, that’s what we’ll do,” he concluded, ready to fulfill his part, regardless of the scheme.
