Austin Reeves Returns to Lakers Lineup Against Nets
NEW YORK — The Lakers are set to welcome back star guard Austin Reeves for their game against the Nets at Barclays Center on Tuesday night.
Reaves has been upgraded from his previous status and will be available. He’s been out for 19 games due to a left calf strain, which he sustained during a Christmas Day loss to the Rockets.
Although he was listed as questionable in the Lakers’ last two games—one win over the Wizards and a loss to the Knicks—he didn’t play. Given his history of missing 22 out of 24 games due to the injury, the team opted to be cautious.
Interestingly, the Lakers have only had their three top players—Reaves, Luka Doncic, and LeBron James—available in just eight of their games this season. And Tuesday marks the 49th game of the year.
“We’ve been healthy for two games all season,” coach JJ Reddick noted before the game. “With Austin coming back, we hope to find a healthy rhythm and determine the best lineup for us.”
Before his injury, Reeves was having an outstanding season; he was performing at a level worthy of All-NBA recognition. In the 23 games he played, he averaged 26.6 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.2 rebounds.
The Lakers have managed a 10-9 record without him, and 12-10 in games since he first got sidelined after a loss to the Spurs on December 10.
“I’ve missed him in every way,” Reddick said, expressing just how valuable Reeves is. “He contributes as both an on-ball and off-ball player, not to mention his leadership and competitive spirit. He’s at an All-Star level, which makes us feel his absence all that more.”
Having Reeves back will boost the Lakers’ offense considerably, especially as he is effective in handling the ball, executing pick-and-roll plays, and driving to the basket. Plus, with his average of 35 minutes per game before his injury, his presence will allow others to settle more comfortably into their roles on the team.
