Missing Boy Found with Help of Police K-9 During Snowstorm
A police K-9 played a crucial role in locating a 13-year-old boy who went missing during a snowstorm in Gastonia, North Carolina, late Saturday. Thankfully, emergency crews managed to find him safe despite the harsh winter weather, officials reported.
The Gastonia Police Department shared on Facebook about K-9 Beau and his handler, Sergeant John Rodger. The search began after the boy, who has special needs, left his home on foot without adequate clothing as the snow continued to fall.
Officers from various agencies formed a search perimeter, while K-9 Beau tracked the boy’s scent through the snow and darkness of the evening. Eventually, the boy wandered into a secure area and was located by Gaston Emergency Medical Services. Although cold, he was unharmed.
The police department noted the success of this operation was due to prompt action, effective teamwork, and the commitment of all involved. K-9 Beau, in particular, exhibited remarkable performance under challenging conditions.
A significant nor’easter had rapidly intensified off the coast of North Carolina just hours before, resulting in record snowfall across parts of the Southeast alongside hurricane-force winds, as reported by FOX Weather.
The storm dumped over a foot of snow in areas of Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Virginia, with wind gusts reaching as high as 110 mph in Nags Head, North Carolina, and widespread gusts exceeding 65 mph on the Outer Banks.
This weather event saw a pressure drop of 33 millibars within just 24 hours, attributed to the interaction between arctic air from the polar vortex and warm, humid air from the Gulf, leading to the storm’s explosive intensification.
