Search for Missing Woman Escalates to Federal Investigation
The case of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who went missing, has captured national attention as a local search evolves into a significant federal inquiry. It has now entered a fourth crucial day.
Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills of Tucson around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday. What started as a routine welfare check after she didn’t show up for church has turned alarming, with authorities discovering a “very disturbing” scene. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and the FBI are now probing the possibility of a nighttime kidnapping.
In an emotional video released Wednesday evening, a visibly distraught Savannah, accompanied by her siblings, made a heartfelt plea for her mother’s safe return.
Expressing gratitude for the support received, Savannah implored, “Please, please bring her home,” emphasizing the urgent need for proof of life to facilitate any further discussions regarding her mother’s status.
“We need to know without a shadow of a doubt that she is alive,” she continued, mentioning the family’s readiness to engage in necessary negotiations when it is safe. Savannah described her mother as a “lighthouse” and someone who embodies “goodness and light,” emphasizing that her grandchildren are waiting to “cover her with kisses.”
This poignant message highlighted the family’s unwavering determination to comply with all requests to secure Nancy’s return, identifying her as a vital figure in their lives.
In response to the situation, President Trump announced that he is sending additional FBI agents to assist with the investigation.
“I spoke with Savannah and assured her that all federal law enforcement agencies are being mobilized to assist the family and local law enforcement fully. We are dedicating every possible resource to ensure her mother is brought home safely. Our nation’s prayers are with her and her family. God bless and protect Nancy!” President Trump shared on Truth Social.
As the search intensifies, authorities are mindful of Nancy’s health. Although she remains mentally sharp and aware, she has limited mobility and needs daily medications related to her heart condition.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office is utilizing extensive resources, collaborating closely with the FBI and Border Patrol.
- Forensic Analysis: Investigators are analyzing DNA samples and fingerprints collected from the home. Preliminary reports indicate that a “small amount of blood” was found, but its origin has yet to be confirmed.
- Surveillance Review: Detectives are scrutinizing Ring camera footage from nearby residences and collecting data from cell towers and license plate readers.
- Possible Ransom: Authorities are examining a potential ransom note reportedly sent to a media organization requesting payment in cryptocurrencies. Although the note’s authenticity is still under review, the sheriff’s office considers it a credible lead.
A church in Albany, New York, has stepped in to offer a $25,000 reward, signaling the broad support from across the nation for the Guthrie family.
Authorities urge anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts or any suspicious behavior in the Catalina Foothills around January 31 to reach out to them. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office can be contacted at 520-351-4900.
